Can type 1 turn into type 2 diabetes?

My brother has Type 1 diabetes, and someone told him that if he doesn't manage it properly, it can turn into Type 2. This confused us a lot, as we thought they were different conditions. Can Type 1 actually convert into Type 2 diabetes?

Nahi yaar, type 1 kabhi type 2 mein change nahi ho sakta. Dono bilkul alag bimariyan hain na. Type 1 autoimmune hai aur type 2 lifestyle-related. Haah, par insulin resistance dono mein ho sakti hai, toh doctor se baat kar lo.

Technically, type 1 cannot turn into type 2 because their root causes are entirely different. However, a type 1 diabetic can develop insulin resistance over time due to poor diet, often called double diabetes. Please consult a dietitian and your doctor.

According to clinical research, type 1 cannot biologically convert into type 2. Type 1 is an autoimmune destruction of beta cells, while type 2 is insulin resistance. My doctor explained that you can develop 'double diabetes' if you gain significant weight, so keep a check.

I was getting really worried about this because my insulin requirements have gone up lately. Can you actually have both types at the same time? I feel so anxious thinking about it. Has anyone else's doctor mentioned this to them?

No, they are two completely different physiological conditions. But if you have type 1 and don't manage your food and weight, you can develop insulin resistance similar to type 2. Keep your carb counts precise and consult your doctor regularly.

In our family, we had many debates on this, but my cousin's doctor made it very clear. Type 1 remains type 1 forever because the pancreas doesn't make insulin. Always rely on a good endocrinologist to clear up these doubts.

No, type 1 cannot transform into type 2. They are distinct clinical diagnoses with different pathophysiology. If you are experiencing changes in your insulin sensitivity, it is best to get a formal evaluation from your doctor.
