Can turmeric cause elevated liver enzymes?

I've been taking turmeric supplements daily for general health benefits for a few months now. My recent blood test showed slightly elevated liver enzymes. Could my turmeric intake potentially be the reason for this elevation?

Haha, standard haldi doodh won't do anything unless you are drinking a bucketful of it daily! But seriously, taking high-dose curcumin supplements can sometimes spike those liver enzymes. Stick to the kitchen spice cupboard!

I didn't know this could happen. I have been taking a turmeric supplement for my joint pain for three months now. Should I get a liver function test done just to be safe?

Don't worry too much. Normal turmeric in our Indian food is perfectly safe and healthy. It's only the concentrated extracts or pills that can sometimes stress the liver in some people. Just stop any supplements and get a simple LFT done.

Actually, yes yaar. A friend of mine was taking heavy curcumin capsules and his SGPT shot up. Our regular haldi in dal-chawal is totally fine, but these heavy supplements can sometimes mess with liver enzymes.

Oh my, I got so anxious reading about herbal liver injuries recently. Even natural things can be risky if they are low quality or too strong. It is best to consult a proper doctor before taking any health store turmeric capsules.

Using raw turmeric or kitchen haldi powder in moderation is very safe and anti-inflammatory. However, processed extracts can be too concentrated for the liver to process. I always suggest sticking to natural food sources rather than pills.

I was just reading some research papers on this. It seems rare, but some cases of liver injury have been linked to high-dose turmeric supplements, especially if they contain black pepper extract which increases absorption too much.
