Can topiramate cause kidney stones?

I'm taking Topiramate for my nerve pain, and a friend recently warned me about potential side effects like kidney stones. Is there a high risk of developing kidney stones while on this medication?

Yes, it is a known side effect because it reduces bicarbonate excretion. I always make sure to drink plenty of water and get my routine blood and BP checks done to keep my kidney health in order.

Yes, topiramate can cause kidney stones. I use a health tracking app to log my daily water intake, ensuring I hit 3 liters a day, which is highly recommended to flush out the mineral deposits.

Don't worry too much, beta. My sister took this medicine for many years and never got stones because she was very diligent about drinking water and buttermilk throughout the day.

Yes, it definitely can. My doctor advised me to avoid high-salt foods while on this medication to lower the stone risk.

I was just prescribed topiramate for my migraines and I am very scared of getting kidney stones. Is there any specific test we should do regularly to check if stones are forming?

It can happen, but please don't stress. Just keep yourself well-hydrated and discuss your concerns with your doctor, they can easily monitor your kidney health with basic urine tests.

I completely understand the anxiety around this side effect, as I felt so stressed and alone when my kidney started hurting while on topiramate. Please speak to your doctor if you feel any discomfort, your feelings are totally valid.
