Can too much spinach cause kidney stones?

My family drinks a lot of spinach juice and eats spinach sabzi almost daily for iron. My neighbour recently had kidney stones and warned me that too much spinach can cause them. Is this true, or can I continue eating it daily?

Haan babu, palak khana toh achha hai par bahut zyada khane se pathri (stone) ho sakti hai. Humare yahan kehte hain ki har cheez seema mein hi khani chahiye. Palak ko humesha acche se ubaal kar hi banana chahiye.

I didn't know spinach could cause kidney stones, I eat it almost thrice a week thinking it is super healthy for my iron levels. Is it really that risky? Should I completely stop eating palak paneer now?

Yes, spinach is very high in oxalates, which bind with calcium to form kidney stones. If you eat it often, just boil or blanch it first to reduce the oxalate content, and drink plenty of water throughout the day. It's all about portion control.

Bro, I got a 6mm kidney stone last year because I was drinking spinach smoothies everyday for my gym diet. The doctor told me to stop eating raw spinach immediately. Now I only eat it cooked and that too once in a while.

Beta, green vegetables are nectar for health, but spinach has a lot of 'pathri' causing elements if eaten in excess. Always cook it with a little cumin and hing, and drink a glass of fresh buttermilk after your meal to help digestion.

I felt so guilty when I got kidney stones because I thought I was eating healthy by eating spinach salads daily. It was physically and emotionally exhausting to deal with that pain. Please don't blame yourself, just limit your spinach intake and drink lots of water.

I was researching this yesterday and found out that spinach is one of the highest sources of oxalates. Apparently, eating calcium-rich foods like yogurt along with spinach helps because the oxalates bind in the gut instead of the kidneys. Quite fascinating, honestly.
