Can tonsil stones cause ear pain?

I frequently get tonsil stones, and recently I've also been having a dull ache in my ears. My mom said these things are often connected because of the close proximity. Is it possible for tonsil stones to cause ear pain?

Yes, beta. The nerves in our throat and ears are deeply connected. When a tonsil stone causes swelling in the throat, that sensation often travels to the ears as a dull ache. Practice gentle neck stretches and do warm salt water gargles to soothe the area.

Honestly, yes! I love my spicy tandoori chicken, but when I had tonsil stones, swallowing food would trigger a sharp pinch right inside my left ear. It made eating so annoying. Gargling with warm water cleared the stones, and the ear pain vanished.

This is called referred otalgia. My ENT doctor explained that the nerve endings in the tonsils and the ear drum share the same pathway to the brain, so the brain gets confused and registers throat irritation as ear pain. He advised against poking the tonsils yourself.

Yes, because the glossopharyngeal nerve runs through both areas. Since I have thyroid issues, I have to be very careful with throat discomfort and get regular ENT checkups. It is always safer to let an ENT doctor examine your throat and ears to rule out any infection.

I am not an expert, but I had a mild ear ache last winter which my doctor said was linked to my tonsils. The throat inflammation can easily pressure the surrounding nerves. If the ear pain is sharp or if you have a fever, please get a proper medical opinion.
