Can toenail fungus cause leg pain?

My toenails have had fungus for ages, and lately, I've been having this strange, dull ache in my calves. My mother-in-law said sometimes infections can travel. Is it possible that my toenail fungus is causing leg pain?

Haan, it can happen if you start walking differently to save your hurting toe from touching the ground. This limping puts extra load on your calf and thigh muscles, causing leg pain. Just wear comfortable open footwear and see a skin doctor soon.

Actually, yes. An altered gait because of a painful toenail can mess up your kinetic chain, leading to calf tightness or knee pain. Keep an eye on it—if the leg pain is muscular, some light stretching helps, but make sure the infection isn't spreading.

When one part of our foot is in pain, the entire leg balance gets disturbed, beta. I used to practice gentle foot-joint rotations (Pada Anguli Naman) to keep the blood circulating well when my toe was sore. Do seek a doctor's advice for the fungus.

Usually, localized nail fungus shouldn't directly cause leg pain. But if there is redness, swelling, or heat spreading up your leg, it could be a sign of a bacterial skin infection like cellulitis. Please get a doctor to check it immediately if that is the case.

I remember feeling so frustrated when my toenail fungus was at its worst because it made even a simple walk to the market painful. My calves would ache constantly from walking funny. It is really draining, but once you treat the nail, the leg pain stops.

Since I manage high blood pressure, my doctor always tells me to keep an eye on foot health as circulation can be poor. Fungal issues that cause leg pain should be evaluated by a professional to ensure there are no deeper vascular issues. Please get a proper checkup.
