Can thyroid meds cause constipation?

Ever since I started my thyroid medication, I've noticed I'm constipated quite often. My digestion was fine before this. Could the thyroid meds be causing this constipation problem?

Usually, the medication is meant to improve digestion and relieve constipation. However, if your dose is not sufficient, the sluggishness will remain. Drinking warm water at night can help, but please check with your doctor to adjust the tablet dose.

I completely understand how uncomfortable and stressful this is for you. Actually, the medicine itself doesn't cause constipation, but if your thyroid levels are still low, you can face this. Give it some time and consult your doctor.

My doctor explained that thyroxine actually speeds up gut motility. So if you are experiencing constipation after starting the meds, it usually means your TSH levels are still high and the dose needs to be increased. Get a fresh blood test.

I consult a specialist at a reputed hospital, and they told me that persistent constipation is a sign that the thyroid hormone replacement is still inadequate. You should ask your doctor clearly to review your dosage based on your latest blood work.

I have PCOS and often deal with digestive issues alongside thyroid. From my experience, if the thyroid dosage is still too low, constipation remains quite common. I'm not an expert, but discussing your diet and reports with your physician is the best way forward.
