Can tens machine make pain worse?

I've been using a TENS machine for my chronic back pain, but sometimes after using it, my pain actually feels worse. Am I doing something wrong? Can a TENS machine make pain worse?

Bro, if you crank up the frequency too high on a TENS machine, it can absolutely irritate your nerves and make the pain worse. It’s like doing heavy deadlifts with bad form. Start with the lowest setting and always focus on proper mobility and a clean diet to recover faster.

I tried using one for my knee pain but it made my skin burn and the ache got sharper. Sometimes, basic warm mustard oil massage or hot water fermentation works much better and safer. If you do use the machine, keep the current very low, don't rush it.

Hey, don't worry. It can feel worse if the gel pads are placed on the wrong spot or if the intensity is set too high for your muscles. Try reducing the setting next time. If it still hurts, stop using it immediately and consult your physiotherapist to guide you.

Yes, it can. Overusing a TENS machine or placing pads directly over swollen joints or broken skin can trigger muscle spasms and increase pain. Keep sessions limited to 20-30 minutes maximum and never use it on high intensity without professional advice.

Dude, absolutely. I got excited and kept the intensity level at 8 on my first try for lower back pain. Next morning I couldn't even bend down properly because of heavy spasms. Keep the pulse gentle, it’s not a competition to tolerate more shock!

With our busy schedules, we want quick relief, but setting a TENS machine too high to speed up recovery backfires. It can cause micro-tears in muscles, making the pain worse. Stick to the settings recommended by your doctor, otherwise you waste more time in recovery.
