Can't swallow after a stroke?

My mother had a stroke a few months ago, and ever since, she's been struggling to swallow food and even water. She coughs a lot when she tries to eat, and it's making meal times very difficult. We are worried about her nutrition.

My cousin faced this and we had to mash everything into baby food texture, which he hated. It is a slow process but rehabilitation works. Just make sure to get professional help before they choke on even a drop of water.

This is a serious medical issue called dysphagia after a stroke. Please contact your neurologist immediately to prevent choking.

This requires expert attention because swallowing difficulties can lead to food entering the lungs, causing aspiration pneumonia. Please do not try feeding them normal liquid or solids at home. Consult their treating doctor or a speech therapist for safe feeding techniques.

It must be so frustrating for them to not be able to enjoy their favorite meals right now. For safety, normal food has to be paused completely. Talk to a specialist about how to transition them safely from thick purees to solids later.

This is a common but dangerous post-stroke complication. You need to consult a speech-language pathologist immediately for a swallowing therapy plan. Do not feed them anything manually until a doctor clears them.
