Can't sleep with depression?

Dealing with depression has made my sleep cycle completely messed up. Some nights I can't sleep at all, just staring at the ceiling, and other nights I sleep too much but still wake up exhausted. It's a really difficult cycle to break.

I went through this and the endless night loops are the worst part. I started going for heavy evening runs just to physically exhaust my body so my brain had no option but to shut down at night. It really helped crack the cycle.

I completely understand how exhausting those quiet, dark hours can feel when you are depressed. Please be gentle with yourself tonight.

Doing 15 minutes of slow 'Anulom Vilom' (alternate nostril breathing) before bed helps balance the mind's energy. It brings a deep sense of stillness that is very comforting when you are feeling low and restless.

Beta, when the mind is heavy, try to read some positive books or listen to peaceful instrumental music in the evening. Drinking warm milk with a pinch of cardamom can also help soothe the nerves. Do speak to a doctor if the sadness and sleeplessness continue.

Depression and insomnia share a very close biological link, and treating one often helps the other. If you are already on therapy or medication, make sure to discuss your sleep pattern with your doctor. Sometimes a simple adjustment in your prescription can work wonders.
