Can't bend thumb without pain?

My thumb joint has started hurting a lot, especially when I try to grip things or make a fist. Now, I can't even bend my thumb without sharp pain. What might be causing this?

This is a very common issue that many people ask about here. It could be due to constant texting, which strain the tendons, or something like trigger thumb where the joint gets inflamed. Try giving your hand a complete break from typing and see if a warm water soak helps.

Before spending money on hand specialists, try using a simple medical thumb splint which you can get for 150-200 rupees at any local pharmacy. Keeping the thumb straight for a couple of days while sleeping helps the muscle heal very quickly.

Oh dear, that sounds so annoying! Don't stress too much about it, we use our phones so much these days that our thumbs just get tired and strained. Put on some soothing pain relief gel and try to avoid typing for a bit. It should feel better soon!

I had this exact same problem in my right thumb last year from playing mobile games. I ignored it until I couldn't even hold a glass of water. Trust me, you need to immobilize that thumb with a brace and apply ice packs twice a day for a week. Don't test the bend repeatedly, let it rest.

If you are having sharp pain while bending the thumb, it might be due to tenosynovitis or a minor tendon inflammation. Keep it rested, you can take a mild over-the-counter pain relief gel to apply locally. If there is swelling or redness that doesn't go away, then get a doctor to look at it.
