Can swimmer's ear cause jaw pain?

My ear has been hurting for a few days, which my doctor said is swimmer's ear. Now I'm also feeling a pain in my jaw, especially when I chew. Can swimmer's ear cause jaw pain as well?

Yes, it actually can. The ear canal is very close to the jaw joint, so the inflammation often spreads and causes discomfort there. Take care and I hope you feel better soon.

Bro, yes! Last year I got swimmer's ear after pool sessions and my jaw hurt so bad I couldn't even chew my food properly. It felt like a toothache or jaw lock, but it was just the ear swelling pressing on the nerves. It cleared up in a few days after using the prescribed ear drops.

Yes, this is medically called referred pain. When I had this, my doctor explained that the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) sits right next to the external auditory canal. So when the canal swells up from swimmer's ear, the pressure radiates to the jaw nerves, making it painful to open your mouth.

Listen, don't stress too much, it is super common! The nerves in our face are all connected, so an earache almost always messes with the jaw too. Just get some drops from a doc, rest up, and you'll be absolutely fine in no time.

Please don't ignore this. I had this jaw stiffness during an ear infection and thought it would go away, but it got so severe I had to be put on strong antibiotics because the infection had spread deeper. Go see a doctor today itself before the pain worsens.

My mother told me to apply warm compress near the cheek for the pain, which gave some temporary relief. However, I trusted our family doctor who confirmed the swimmer's ear infection was causing the jaw pain. He gave me specific ear drops that cured the root cause.

It is quite common because of shared nerve pathways in that area of the face. Usually, once the ear inflammation goes down with proper ear drops, the jaw pain disappears on its own. Avoid chewing very hard foods for a couple of days to give your jaw some rest.
