Can spironolactone cause kidney problems?

My doctor has put me on spironolactone for fluid retention. I'm always cautious about medicines and their long-term effects. Can this medication cause any kidney problems?

I was put on this for high blood pressure, and my doctor made me get kidney function tests (KFT) every month initially. It can put a strain on the kidneys or raise potassium levels if not monitored. Definitely don't skip those blood tests, they are crucial.

Yes, spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic, which means it makes your body hold onto potassium while getting rid of water. If your kidneys aren't working fully, this can cause potassium to build up, which is risky. That is why doctors always do regular blood tests to check your kidney function while you are on it.

I've been on spironolactone for my PCOS, and honestly, my doctor just told me to stay well-hydrated and do a routine blood test every few months. As long as you are doing your checkups, there's usually nothing to worry about. Just drink plenty of water!

I can only speak from my own experience with this medicine. My doctor had me do a blood test to check my creatinine and potassium levels before starting, and again after a month. Once the reports came back normal, he said I was good to continue. Always follow what your own doctor says.

I was just reading about this because my sister was prescribed this for hormonal acne. It seems like it's mostly safe, but you have to avoid too many potassium-rich foods like bananas. It's really interesting how a simple pill requires so much care with your diet!

This medicine makes me so anxious because I'm always worried about my potassium levels going too high and hurting my kidneys. I literally check my lab reports three times. If you feel any fatigue or muscle weakness, definitely contact your doctor right away for peace of mind.

Spironolactone does affect kidney function because of how it alters fluid and electrolyte balance. While it is generally safe for people with healthy kidneys, it can be problematic for those with pre-existing renal issues. Your doctor is the best person to evaluate your kidney health before prescribing it.
