Can sore muscles cause fever?

After a particularly intense workout, my muscles were incredibly sore the next day. I also felt a bit feverish and tired. I was wondering, can very sore muscles actually cause a slight fever or make you feel generally unwell?

No, normal muscle soreness from exercise shouldn't cause a fever. If you have both, it is likely a viral infection or flu.

In my sixty years, I have seen that sudden body ache followed by a fever usually means seasonal viral flu. Don't worry, just take plenty of rest and sip on warm soups. The body heals itself beautifully with enough downtime.

Gym soreness doesn't give you a fever, period. If you are running a temperature, your body is fighting off a bug or an infection. Take some rest and don't push yourself to work out until you recover.

Before you spend thousands on viral panel tests and doctor consultations, just track your fever for a day. If it is a mild viral flu, resting at home with basic paracetamol might fix it, but don't delay a clinic visit if the fever crosses 101.

Hey, don't stress too much! You probably just caught a mild cold or viral bug along with some body ache from a hectic week. Drink lots of water, take a warm shower, and get some solid sleep tonight.

Please be very careful with this. I once ignored severe muscle pain thinking it was just fatigue, but it turned out to be a severe infection that spread. If your fever is climbing or the muscle pain is extreme, go see a doctor immediately.
