Can skin cancer be flat?

There's a flat, discolored patch on my arm that doesn't look like a typical raised mole. I heard that some skin cancers can be flat. Is this true?

Yes, skin cancer is not always a raised bump. It can definitely appear as a flat, discolored patch or a mole, so don't ignore it just because it isn't raised.

I didn't know that skin cancer could be flat... I thought it was always a big bump. Is there a specific color we should look out for in flat spots?

Yes, it can. There are skin-checking apps that help you track the asymmetry and borders of even flat moles. If a flat spot has irregular edges or changes color, get it checked.

My colleague had a flat, reddish patch on his forehead that he thought was dry skin, but it turned out to be a form of skin cancer. He got it treated early and is doing fine now.

Actually, yes. Melanomas and basal cell carcinomas can often start as flat brown, black, or pinkish patches. If you notice any flat spot changing size or bleeding, see a dermatologist.

While many flat spots are harmless moles or age spots, some skin cancers are indeed flat. For your safety and peace of mind, please have any new or changing flat spots evaluated by a doctor.

I understand how confusing and stressful it is trying to check your own skin. I used to obsess over every flat freckle on my body and panic, but getting a professional dermatologist check really helps ease the mind.

Please don't wait for a spot to become raised. I ignored a flat, scaly patch on my arm for a year thinking it was just dry skin, and I really regret delaying the checkup. Get it looked at by a doctor.
