Can sickle cell people get malaria?

I'm a medical student, and we were discussing genetic conditions in class. I remember learning about sickle cell anemia and how it offers some protection against malaria. Does this mean people with sickle cell disease cannot get malaria at all, or is the risk just reduced?

Yes, people with sickle cell trait can still get malaria, though they have some natural protection against severe forms of it. However, if you have full sickle cell disease, malaria can actually be extremely dangerous, so please use mosquito nets and see a doctor immediately if you get a fever.

Haan bhai, malaria definitely happens to people with sickle cell also. In our village, we tell everyone to use mosquito coils and clean up standing water, because any fever can make a sickle cell patient very sick.

My family doctor explained that while the sickle cell trait offers a evolutionary survival advantage against severe malaria, those with actual sickle cell anemia are highly vulnerable to life-threatening complications if infected. They need immediate medical attention for any fever.

They absolutely can get malaria, and the complications can be severe. The most practical thing is prevention: use mosquito nets, liquid vaporizers at home, and wear full sleeves when going out in the evenings.

Yes, they can! It's a common myth that they are fully immune. Please make sure to keep your surroundings clean and use mosquito repellents to stay safe out there.

They definitely can, and keeping your immunity up is key. If you have sickle cell, maintaining light physical activity like daily walking can keep your circulation good, but always protect yourself from mosquito bites first.

I have sickle cell disease and I actually got malaria last monsoon. It was terrible and triggered a severe pain crisis, so I had to be hospitalized. Please don't take it lightly.
