Can shoveling snow cause heart attacks?

Winters here can be quite harsh, and sometimes we have to shovel snow from our driveway. My husband is getting older, and I heard a warning on TV about it. Can the exertion from shoveling snow really cause heart attacks, especially in older people?

Honestly, I am too tired to even shovel my blanket off me in the morning, but yes, sudden heavy lifting in freezing cold can put a massive strain on the heart. If you are already exhausted, please let someone else do it.

It actually can, especially if you aren't used to such heavy physical labor in the cold! The cold weather shrinks blood vessels, so please stay safe and warm out there, and don't push your body too hard.

While taking warm ginger tea can help keep your body temperature up, shoveling is very heavy cardio. If you ever feel any chest tightness, breathlessness, or sweating, stop immediately and rush to a hospital instead of trying home remedies.

My uncle lives abroad and his doctor specifically warned him about this because of his high BP. It is super important to warm up your muscles inside the house before you head out to clear the snow.

It is a known risk because of the sudden intense exertion in cold weather. A simple solution is to break the work into small parts, take frequent breaks, and use a smaller shovel so you don't lift too much weight at once.

This thought honestly terrifies me every winter when relatives travel. The sudden cold plus heavy lifting is a dangerous combo for blood pressure. Please make sure to get a regular heart checkup done if you have to do this often.

At my age, even climbing stairs too fast makes my heart run a marathon, so shoveling heavy snow is definitely a big risk. If you have any history of heart issues, just pay some local kid to do it and save yourself the trouble.

Living in Mumbai, the only snow I see is in movies, but medically, yes, heavy lifting in the cold is no joke for your chest. Don't try to be a hero out there, take it slow and chill!
