Can semaglutide cause kidney stones?

I'm taking semaglutide for my diabetes. Recently, I've had some discomfort that made me wonder if I might be developing kidney stones. I heard somewhere that this medicine can affect kidney health. Is there a link between semaglutide and kidney stone formation?

There is no direct link showing semaglutide causes kidney stones. However, my doctor explained that the rapid weight loss and potential dehydration from the drug can increase the concentration of calcium and oxalate in your urine, which can lead to stones. Always stay hydrated.

Please try not to worry too much. Just make sure you are drinking enough water throughout the day to keep your kidneys flushed. You will be okay.

I actually developed severe abdominal pain which turned out to be a kidney stone after losing weight too fast on this medication. It was extremely painful. If you feel any sharp pain in your back or side, please see a doctor immediately.

I've been in several support groups for semaglutide users. While stones aren't a direct side effect listed on the box, the dehydration from reduced appetite is the real culprit. Drinking coconut water and plain water helps a lot.

Agreed with the hydration advice. Adding a slice of lemon to your water can also help prevent certain types of kidney stones.

Honestly, if you are busy working, it is easy to forget to drink water on this medication. Set a phone reminder to drink water every hour. It is a quick and practical way to prevent kidney stone complications without wasting time.

I have seen many people take new-age medicines for weight loss. Rapid changes in the body can sometimes cause small issues like stones. Just go slow, eat simple home-cooked meals, and don't rush the weight loss process.

Because of my high blood pressure, I always monitor my kidney health very closely with regular blood and urine tests. If you are taking semaglutide, please get your renal panel checked regularly to catch any issues early.
