Can rheumatoid arthritis come on suddenly?

My friend was recently diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, and she said her symptoms just appeared suddenly. I always thought it was a condition that developed slowly, so I'm curious if it can actually come on so abruptly.

Yes, while it usually develops slowly over months, RA can sometimes present as an acute onset, where multiple joints become highly inflamed and painful almost overnight. If this is happening, don't wait for it to pass, get to a rheumatologist immediately for proper blood tests.

I was reading up on this because my aunt woke up one morning with severe pain in both her hands out of nowhere. It turns out that sudden explosive onset of RA is actually a recognized medical pattern, though most people think it only happens slowly.

Honestly, I had no idea this could happen overnight. My cousin was perfectly fine and suddenly within a week his fingers got so stiff he couldn't even hold a pen. It is crazy how fast it can hit you.

If your joints have swollen up suddenly, don't assume it is just a normal sprain and start applying random home balms. Sudden joint inflammation could be acute RA, gout, or even an infection. Get it diagnosed professionally by a doctor.

An acute, sudden onset of RA can feel very shocking to the body. While you must follow your doctor's medical treatment immediately, keeping your diet simple, warm, and highly anti-inflammatory can help your gut and body cope with the sudden systemic stress.
