Can retainers cause cavities?

I just got my braces off and now I have to wear a retainer. My dentist stressed cleaning it well, but my friend said that retainers can still cause cavities. Is that true?

They absolutely can if you don't clean them properly. Food particles and saliva get trapped under the retainer, which creates a breeding ground for bacteria. Wash your retainer every single time you take it out and brush before wearing it.

Oh God, I constantly worry about this! Every time I put my retainers in, I feel like I'm trapping plaque against my teeth. Just try to be super clean with your brushing and flossing so you don't get cavities, it really helps calm the anxiety.

I panicked so much when I saw a tiny dark spot on my tooth while using retainers. But my dentist reassured me that with basic daily hygiene, retainers are completely safe. Just soak them in a cleaning solution once a week and you'll be fine.

Look, retainers themselves don't damage your teeth. It is your lazy habits. If you wear them without brushing your teeth properly, of course you will get cavities. Keep them clean and visit your dentist regularly.

I focus a lot on my general health and BP checks, but oral hygiene is also a major part of overall wellness. Dirty retainers can cause gum irritation and decay. Make sure you get regular dental checkups along with your routine medical visits.
