Can prednisone cause stomach pain?

Ever since I started taking prednisone for my arthritis, I've been getting a lot of stomach pain and acidity. Is this normal, or is the medicine causing these issues?

Yes, prednisone can definitely irritate your stomach and cause pain. It is usually best to take it with a meal or ask your doctor for an antacid to prevent this.

Prednisone is very harsh on the stomach lining, especially for us Indians who love spicy food. When my husband was on it, I gave him fresh buttermilk and bananas which cooled his stomach naturally. Also, make sure you take it with a heavy breakfast, not empty stomach.

My son had terrible stomach ache when he was prescribed prednisone for his chest allergy. I started giving him his tablet right in the middle of his breakfast with some cold milk, and that really helped reduce the burning. Always check with your pediatrician or family doctor about adding an antacid.

Please don't take stomach pain lightly while on steroids. I ignored mild burning which later turned into a bleeding stomach ulcer because of prednisone. If the pain is sharp or you see black stools, go to a doctor or hospital immediately.

Yes, it causes gastric irritation. Don't waste time trying different home remedies; just ask your doctor to add a daily PPI like Pantocid to your morning routine. It's a quick, standard clinical solution that works within a day.

At 53, my stomach complains even if I look at a samosa, and prednisone just made it ten times worse! It gave me severe gas and burning. Keeping meals extremely light and taking a basic gas tablet from the chemist was my only savior.
