Can people with diabetes eat sugar?

My doctor told me to completely cut out sugar after my diabetes diagnosis, which is very difficult. I was wondering about practical limits. Can people with diabetes eat sugar at all, or should it be avoided strictly?

My teenager has type 1 diabetes, and honestly, we do allow a tiny bit of sugar during special occasions, but with proper planning. You just have to manage the insulin doses or carb count carefully. Complete restriction only makes kids crave it more, so moderation is key.

As a strict vegetarian who tracks every single calorie, I'd suggest avoiding direct white sugar altogether. It has zero nutritional value and spikes your levels instantly. Focus on getting your complex carbs from natural sources like whole grains instead.

I'm no expert, but I've personally stopped putting sugar in my tea or coffee for the past two years. My energy levels have actually been much more consistent, and I don't miss the afternoon energy crashes anymore.

In my experience, refined sugar creates a lot of imbalance in the body's energy. I have managed my sugar levels well with daily yogic practices and a simple, sugar-free diet. It is much better to satisfy your sweet cravings naturally with fruits in limited quantities.

I completely understand how depressing it feels when you're suddenly told to stop eating sugar, it really caused me massive anxiety. But don't worry, you don't have to live in fear. You can have small treats occasionally as long as your daily numbers are stable.
