Can peanuts be eaten in diabetes?

I was recently diagnosed with diabetes and my doctor gave me a long list of foods to avoid. I'm a big fan of peanuts and was wondering if they are safe to eat. Can people with diabetes safely include peanuts in their diet?

I had gestational diabetes recently and my dietitian actually recommended a handful of roasted peanuts as an evening snack. They have a very low glycemic index and didn't spike my blood sugar at all, so they are great in moderation.

Yes, they absolutely can! Peanuts are rich in healthy fats and protein, which actually helps keep you full without messing with your glucose levels. Just stick to plain roasted ones instead of the fried or salted market packs.

Peanuts have a low glycemic index and contain magnesium, which is beneficial for insulin sensitivity. However, they are high in calories, so portion control is important—about a handful a day is perfect. Just verify with your doctor or dietitian to fit it into your specific plan.

Don't just start eating bags of peanuts because people online say they are healthy. While they are low glycemic, how they affect your specific blood sugar levels can vary. It's always best to check with your diabetologist and monitor your sugar after eating them.

I track my father's blood glucose levels using a continuous glucose monitor, and we noticed that a handful of almonds or peanuts in the evening actually helps stabilize his fasting sugar. Just log your portions on a health app to make sure you aren't overdoing the calories.
