Can osteoarthritis turn into rheumatoid arthritis?

I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis a few years back. Lately, I've noticed my joints feeling even more inflamed and painful, almost symmetrical. Can osteoarthritis progress or 'turn into' rheumatoid arthritis?

According to the medical articles on my health tracker app, no. Osteoarthritis is mechanical wear and tear, while rheumatoid is an autoimmune condition. They are completely different, though you can have both together.

In my family, my mother had wear-and-tear osteoarthritis in her knees, but she never developed rheumatoid arthritis. They are distinct issues as per what her doctors told us during her treatment.

No babuji, they are different diseases. One is due to old age joint weakness and the other is a blood-related auto-immune issue. My uncle has osteoarthritis and it never changed into the other one.

I totally get it, dealing with joint pain makes you worry about all kinds of worst-case scenarios. Rest assured, one doesn't turn into the other because their causes are entirely different. Take care of yourself.

They don't transform into each other, but eating an anti-inflammatory vegetarian diet rich in turmeric and omega-3 helps manage symptoms of both conditions. Always consult your doctor for a proper diagnosis.
