Can mucus cause vomiting?

My child has been having a really bad cold with lots of congestion and sometimes throws up after coughing heavily. My mother-in-law says it's because of swallowing mucus. Can mucus actually cause vomiting, especially in children?

Yes, absolutely. When you have a bad cold, excess mucus drips down the back of your throat—called post-nasal drip—which can easily trigger your gag reflex and cause vomiting, especially in kids or when you cough heavily. Drinking warm water and steam inhalation can help clear it up.

This happens to me every single time I get a severe sinus infection! The mucus dripping down my throat makes me so nauseous, and heavy coughing fits end up causing vomiting. Having warm ginger tea really helps soothe my throat and stomach.

Haan, bilkul ho sakta hai. Jab gale me bohot phlegm jama ho jata hai na, toh coughing ki wajah se gag reflex trigger hota hai aur ulti ho jati hai. Thoda garm paani piyo aur steam lo, aaram milega.

My doctor explained that when mucus drains into the stomach during a cold, it can irritate the stomach lining and cause nausea or vomiting. He recommended using saline nasal drops to stop the post-nasal drip rather than taking heavy stomach medicines. If it persists, it's always best to get a checkup.

Don't run to a hospital for expensive gastro tests just because of vomiting during a cold. It is very likely just mucus irritating your throat. Try basic home remedies like steam and warm water first; it's practically free and usually solves the problem.
