Can metformin cause kidney disease?

I've been on Metformin for my diabetes for many years now. My neighbour recently mentioned that long-term use of this medicine can lead to kidney disease. Is this true?

I've been on Metformin for almost 10 years now. The medicine itself doesn't cause kidney disease, but if your kidneys are already weak, the drug can build up in your body and cause issues. The best tip is to get your eGFR and kidney function tests done every six months without fail.

Hey, don't worry about this. Metformin is actually protective because controlling your diabetes is the best way to save your kidneys from damage. Just make sure to get routine blood work done so your doctor can adjust the dose if needed.

Dealing with chronic thyroid issues has taught me that regular blood tests are our best friend. Just like I check my TSH, you must get your creatinine and kidney function tested regularly while on Metformin. Keep your doctor in the loop and follow up routinely to stay safe.

I was researching this for my dad. Actually, Metformin doesn't cause kidney disease directly. But since it is cleared out of the body through the kidneys, doctors stop or lower the dose if a patient already has existing kidney damage. It's a very common misunderstanding.

My father had mild kidney issues and was kept on Metformin, which led to a serious condition called lactic acidosis. Please be very careful. If you have any history of kidney trouble, you must get your kidney function checked and consult your doctor to see if you need to switch medications.

I help my uncle log his blood sugar and HbA1c on a health app. His doctor explicitly told us that Metformin is very safe for kidneys as long as his kidney filtration rates (eGFR) are monitored. You can easily track your lab report trends in these modern health apps to stay on top of it!
