Can mental health counselors diagnose?

I'm considering seeing a mental health counselor for some issues I'm facing. Before I go, I wanted to confirm if counselors in India are allowed to diagnose conditions, or if that's only for psychiatrists.

We need to plan this practically because clinical psychologists and psychiatrists are the ones who can legally diagnose and write reports, which you might need for insurance or school. Counselors can guide you, but if you need a formal diagnosis, visit a clinical psychologist. This will save you from spending double on consultation fees.

Actually yaar, normal counselors are great for talking out your issues, but they don't give official medical diagnoses. For that, you need to see a clinical psychologist or a psychiatrist. Don't get confused between them, both have different roles.

Hamare yahan sheher mein ek counselor didi hain, woh baatein sunkar mann halka kar deti hain. Par unhone khud kaha tha ki agar koi badi bimari ka pata lagana ho, toh bade doctor ya psychologist ke paas hi jaana chahiye. Woh log sahi se janch karte hain.

Hey, don't worry about the labels too much. While general counselors can identify symptoms and help you cope, only a licensed clinical psychologist or psychiatrist can formally diagnose clinical conditions. If you feel you need a proper assessment, I can help you find a qualified professional.

I am actually thinking of seeing someone for my anxiety, but I am a bit scared. Can a counselor tell me if I have a clinical disorder, or do I have to see a psychiatrist first for that? Please let me know how it works.
