Can lack of sleep kill you?

My daughter is constantly telling me to get more sleep, especially after I read an article online about sleep deprivation. It sounds quite serious. Can a prolonged and severe lack of sleep actually be fatal or lead to life-threatening conditions?

Directly? No, but extreme chronic sleep deprivation absolutely destroys your cardiovascular health and immune system over time. Your muscles and heart need that recovery window to function properly. Don't compromise on your 7 hours.

Please don't take extreme sleep loss lightly. I used to pull continuous all-nighters until I passed out one day and had to be rushed to the hospital with severe exhaustion. If you are experiencing severe sleep issues, please see a doctor immediately.

Don't worry, staying up late occasionally won't kill you, so please don't panic. But yes, severe long-term sleep deprivation is very harmful to your heart and brain. Take a deep breath, put your phone away, and let's try to sleep on time tonight.

My health tracker shows a terrible HRV and spiked resting heart rate when I sleep poorly, which is bad for longevity. While it won't kill you instantly, long-term sleep debt increases your risk of chronic diseases. Track your sleep and prioritize it.

This question is so scary to think about, but I actually worry about this when I can't sleep for days. My chest feels so tight and my heart races. Has anyone else felt this extreme panic from no sleep, or is it just my anxiety?

While missing a night's sleep won't be fatal, chronic sleep deprivation can lead to severe health complications like stroke or heart failure. I had a relative who suffered greatly due to untreated sleep apnea. Please consult a doctor if you can't sleep.
