Can lack of sleep cause sore throat?

My throat feels sore and scratchy quite often, almost like I'm about to get sick, but it never progresses further. I'm usually only getting 5 hours of sleep due to my demanding job. Can lack of sleep make my throat feel constantly sore?

Haan bhai, when you stay up all night singing along to music or just talking on the phone, your throat is bound to protest! Seriously though, low sleep drops your immunity, making it easy for a cold to catch you.

I used to think my morning sore throat was some major infection and would panic. Turns out, when I sleep late, I tend to mouth-breathe due to exhaustion, which dries up my throat. A warm glass of water fixed it, so don't worry.

Lack of sleep lowers your immunity, which can let a simple throat infection turn worse. I once ignored a sore throat while working night shifts and ended up with a severe tonsil infection. Please see a doctor if it hurts to swallow.

It can certainly lower your body's defenses and make you catch a cold easily. But if you also have a fever or difficulty breathing, please consult a physician rather than just waiting for it to go away on its own.

Totally! Whenever I run on 4 hours of sleep, I wake up with a scratchy throat. I usually do warm salt water gargles twice a day and try to sleep early. It usually clears up in a day or two once I catch up on rest.
