Can lack of sleep cause migraines?

I've been suffering from terrible migraines lately, the kind that make me unable to do anything. My sleep has been very broken due to my young kids. My friend told me that lack of sleep often triggers her migraines. Is that a common connection?

Listen, lack of sleep is literally the biggest trigger for migraines. I know work or college is stressful, but don't stress too much about things and just go to sleep on time. Grab a dark room, put a cold cloth on your forehead, and relax.

Yes, child, keeping awake at night heat up the body and triggers bad headaches. You can apply a little warm sesame oil on your temples or drink warm milk with a pinch of nutmeg before bed. Please rest your eyes and avoid screens.

It definitely does. I used to get terrible attacks every weekend after working late nights all week. I had to strictly set a 11 PM bedtime alarm on my phone. Setting a routine is the only practical way to manage this.

Please get this checked. I used to ignore my sleep-deprived headaches thinking it is normal, until it turned into severe chronic migraines that ruined my daily life. Go see a doctor before it gets worse.

Yes, sleep deprivation disturbs your body's rhythm. Along with getting sleep, make sure you don't skip meals because low blood sugar combined with no sleep is a guaranteed migraine trigger. Eat light, home-cooked food on time.

While bad sleep is a very common trigger, sudden severe head pain can sometimes indicate other issues. It's always best to get a doctor's opinion to rule out anything serious instead of just guessing.

Don't go by home remedies or random tips on the internet for migraines. It is a neurological issue and sleep deprivation is a known trigger, but you must consult a proper neurologist to get the right treatment plan.

With my PCOS, hormonal changes and bad sleep together always bring on a terrible migraine. I am not an expert, but fixing my sleep schedule and keeping hydrated has definitely helped reduce the frequency of my headaches.
