Can kidney stones cause hip pain?

I've had kidney stones on and off for a few years. Recently, I started getting a strange pain in my hip, especially on the side where the stone is. Can kidney stones cause referred pain to the hip?

I completely understand how exhausting and scary this is. When my kidney stone pain started radiating to my hip, I felt so frustrated because I couldn't even sit or lie down comfortably. It really takes a toll on your mind, but please know it is a known symptom and you will get through this.

Yes, the pain from the kidneys often radiates to the hip and groin area due to shared nerve pathways. As someone managing high blood pressure, I always make sure to keep up with my regular checkups to monitor kidney health, as lifestyle changes play a huge role.

I just recovered from an 8mm stone last week, and yes, the hip and lower back pain on my left side was unbearable. The moment the stone moved down into the bladder, that hip pressure completely vanished. Hang in there, it does get better.

Omg yes! I had this last semester during exams and thought I pulled a muscle in my hip from sitting too long. Turns out it was a tiny kidney stone acting up. It's super annoying but totally a thing.

You can try using a warm compress or heating pad on your hip to help relax the tense muscles. However, if the pain becomes sudden, sharp, and unbearable, or if you get a fever, please see a doctor immediately.

I was just reading up on this because my uncle is experiencing the same thing. Apparently, the nerves that go to your kidneys run right past your hips and groin, which is why the pain tricks your brain into thinking your hip hurts. Super interesting but painful!

Hey, don't stress too much! Hip pain is actually very common with kidney stones because of how the nerves are wired down there. Just take your pain meds, drink lots of water, and rest up. You'll be totally fine!

Please don't do what I did. I ignored my hip and lower back pain thinking it was just a regular muscle pull from gymming, until the stone blocked my ureter completely and I had to be rushed to emergency. Get a simple ultrasound done now to be safe.
