Can kidney pain be mistaken for back pain?

I've been having persistent lower back pain for weeks, and everyone keeps telling me it's just a muscle strain. But I'm worried it might be something else. Is it common for kidney pain to feel like regular back pain and be mistaken for it?

Beta, at my age, we get all sorts of muscle stiffness, and it's very easy to confuse it with kidney pain. But kidney pain is usually deeper, constant, and sits higher up under the ribs. Don't worry, a simple visit to the doctor will clear up the confusion.

I completely panicked last year thinking my terrible back ache was a kidney failure sign! Turns out it was just a muscle pull from moving heavy furniture. Kidney pain doesn't usually change when you stretch, while muscle pain does. It's often nothing scary, so stay calm.

I had a constant ache in my mid-back and thought it was just bad posture from my work desk. It ended up being a mild kidney infection! If your back pain feels deep and is accompanied by a dull throb, definitely go get a simple urine test done.

Yes, it is very commonly mistaken for normal back pain. A good way to tell is if you also have symptoms like fever, chills, or changes in your urine color.

I just went through this. I spent days applying pain relief sprays to my lower back thinking it was a muscle spasm, but the pain just wouldn't go away. It turned out to be a kidney stone. If pain relief creams aren't working, get an ultrasound.

Yes, my teenager kept complaining of a 'backache' after sports, and we thought it was just physical fatigue. It actually turned out to be a kidney issue that needed medical attention. Please get it checked by a pediatrician or doctor to be safe.
