Can irritable bowel syndrome cause back pain?

Managing IBS has been quite challenging for a few years now. Recently, I've started getting persistent lower back pain, especially during flare-ups. Could my irritable bowel syndrome be causing this back pain, or is it completely unrelated?

Hello, I am also trying to understand this because my tummy gets very bloated and then my lower back starts aching. Is the pain usually on one side or does it cover the whole lower back? I am quite nervous to ask my doctor about this.

Yes, they are definitely linked because constant gut distress puts pressure on the pelvic area and lower spine. I used to face this heavily until I started gentle Pawanmuktasana and deep breathing daily. It really helps release that trapped wind and eases the back tension.

Oh absolutely, I just got over a terrible flare-up last month where my lower back was constantly throbbing. Actually my doctor explained that when the colon stretches from gas, it refers pain to the lower back. Once we managed my gut with proper diet and fiber, the back pain disappeared completely.

Yeah bro, it does. I get bad cramps and then my back feels totally stiff, especially when I sit for college lectures. Just drink loads of water and avoid processed junk for a few days, it really makes a difference.

Please don't assume it is only IBS, you must get it checked by a proper gastroenterologist. I thought my backache was just from gas, but it turned out to be a severe gut infection that needed strong treatment. It is better to do a few tests early than to suffer later.

Honestly, whenever I cheat and eat extra spicy butter chicken or deep-fried pakodas, my IBS goes crazy. And the next morning my lower back aches like I've run a marathon. It's a sad life, but a light hot water bag and eating simple dahi-chawal for two days usually fixes both.

I can only share what happened with me, as I am not a doctor. Whenever my IBS triggers, my lower back pain also flares up quite badly at the exact same time. For me, taking a warm bath and resting a bit helps settle both down.
