Can influenza cause diarrhea and vomiting?

I've got the flu right now, and along with the usual body aches and fever, I'm also experiencing severe diarrhea and vomiting. I thought flu was mainly respiratory. Can influenza really cause both diarrhea and vomiting?

Yes, influenza can sometimes cause gastrointestinal symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea. However, these symptoms can also point to food poisoning or a different viral infection. It is always safest to get examined by a doctor to get the right treatment.

Yes, it can, especially in kids, though it is less common in adults. I always worry so much about dehydration when this happens. Please keep track of how many times you are vomiting and make sure to sip ORS constantly to stay safe.

Don't worry, yes, influenza can sometimes mess with your stomach too. Just focus on resting and drinking electoral or coconut water in small sips. If you feel too weak or can't keep fluids down, let me know and we will get you to a doctor.

Yes, it can, and please don't take it lightly. I once ignored severe vomiting during a flu episode, thinking it would pass, and ended up severely dehydrated in the hospital. If you are feeling dizzy or can't retain water, please see a doctor immediately.

Yes, it can. I completely panicked last winter when I had high fever along with loose motions, thinking it was something severe. My doctor reassured me that flu can occasionally affect the gut too, and I was perfectly fine in a few days.

Yes, it can cause stomach upset alongside respiratory symptoms. Having thyroid issues has made me very careful about keeping my body stable, so when flu hits, I focus on plain khichdi and plenty of fluids, and always follow up with my doctor.
