Can i sleep on my back while pregnant?

I'm pregnant, and naturally, I tend to sleep on my back. A friend recently told me that this position is unsafe during pregnancy. Is it true that I cannot sleep on my back while pregnant, or is it only for later stages?

Beta, in the first few months it is fine, but as the baby grows, you should avoid sleeping on your back. It can reduce blood flow to the baby and make you feel dizzy. Try sleeping on your left side with a soft pillow.

My doctor told me to strictly avoid back sleeping after the second trimester. It causes backaches and heavy pressure on your veins. I used a long pregnancy pillow to support my back and stay on my side, it really helped.

After 20 weeks, sleeping on your back puts the heavy uterus on the inferior vena cava, which can lower your blood pressure and decrease oxygen supply to the baby. Sleeping on the left side is the safest option.

Honestly, don't overcomplicate it. If you wake up on your back, don't panic, just roll back to your side. Get a wedge pillow to prevent rolling over at night.

Side sleeping is definitely better for circulation in later months. Also, make sure you are eating a fiber-rich vegetarian diet to avoid constipation, which can make side sleeping even more uncomfortable.
