Can humans sleep standing up?

My friends and I were having a discussion about how animals sleep, and someone joked about humans sleeping standing up like horses. It got me thinking, is it actually possible for a human to genuinely sleep while standing?

No, humans cannot truly sleep standing up because our muscles fully relax during deep sleep, causing us to fall. Lack of proper sleep can seriously affect your blood pressure, so make sure you get 7-8 hours of lying-down rest.

In our younger days during long train journeys, we used to stand and doze off for a few seconds, but that is not real sleep. Your body needs a proper bed and a calm mind to truly rest and heal.

Not really, your body needs to lie down to enter deep sleep phases. If you are feeling so exhausted that you feel like falling asleep while standing, please get your thyroid levels checked as extreme fatigue is a common symptom.

I was actually reading about sleep cycles yesterday! Apparently, horses can sleep standing because of a special joint locking system, but humans definitely can't do that because our brain cuts off muscle control during REM sleep.

No, it's physically impossible for humans to fall into a proper sleep state standing up because of our muscle tone and balance. You might nod off for a second, but you will instantly lose balance and wake up.

My grandmother used to say that sleeping in weird positions is bad for the spine, and modern science agrees. We need flat support to let our nerves relax properly. If you have extreme sleep issues, please consult a physician.
