Can heartburn cause back pain?

I've noticed a strange connection between my acidity and a persistent ache in my upper back. Is it possible for heartburn to cause back pain?

Yes, severe heartburn or acid reflux can sometimes cause referred pain that is felt in the upper back. Please try to stay calm, drink some warm water, and see a doctor if the discomfort does not improve.

I didn't know that stomach acid could travel and cause pain in the back, but it actually happens to me after heavy dinners. Is it normal for this back pain to feel like a dull squeeze between the shoulder blades? I am a bit concerned and might see a doctor soon.

As a diabetic patient, I am always cautious because severe acid reflux can radiate to the back and mimic other serious cardiovascular issues. It is important to manage your diet carefully and avoid lying down immediately after meals. Please consult your physician to rule out any cardiac causes for your back discomfort.

My son had severe acid reflux and would often complain of a sharp pain in his upper back after eating spicy snacks. We found out that the esophagus and back share similar nerve pathways, which causes this referred pain. Keep meals light and consult a pediatrician or family doctor to be safe.

While gastroesophageal reflux can occasionally cause referred pain in the upper back, back pain combined with chest pressure is also a known symptom of atypical cardiac events. To ensure your safety, please do not dismiss this as simple heartburn and get evaluated by a healthcare professional.
