Can half a thyroid function normally?

I had surgery last year where half of my thyroid was removed due to a nodule. My doctor said the remaining part should compensate, but I still feel tired sometimes. Can the remaining half of my thyroid gland really function normally on its own?

Yes, the remaining half of the thyroid can often produce enough hormones for your body to work perfectly. But you can't just guess this. You must get your TSH levels tested regularly to know for sure.

I had half my thyroid removed due to a nodule three years ago. In my experience, the remaining half initially worked fine, but later I had to start a low dose of thyroid hormone as my TSH went up. Regular tests are a must.

Yes, the remaining part can adapt and function normally. Just make sure to get regular blood tests as advised by your doctor.

My doctor told me that in about 60 to 70 percent of cases, the remaining thyroid lobe is sufficient. I had my partial thyroidectomy five years ago and managed to stay off medication by maintaining a active lifestyle and doing timely checkups. Stay positive!
