Can guys have thyroid issues?

I've been feeling unusually tired and gained some weight recently, even though my diet hasn't changed much. My sister has thyroid problems, and she suggested I get checked. Can men also get thyroid issues, or is it mostly a female condition?

Yes, absolutely. People often think thyroid is only a women's problem, but I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism ten years ago. I felt constantly tired and was putting on weight. Once I started taking the daily morning pill as prescribed by my doctor, I felt completely normal again.

I am a 27-year-old guy and my doctor just suggested a thyroid test because I have been losing hair and feeling super exhausted lately. I was quite surprised because I thought only women get this. Did any other guys here face similar symptoms before being diagnosed?

I have thyroid issues myself and my brother was also diagnosed with it recently. He struggled with mood changes and exhaustion for months, feeling guilty that he was just being lazy. It is so validating to realize it is just a hormonal imbalance that can happen to anyone. Men should definitely get checked.

Thyroid issues are definitely underdiagnosed in men because of the common myth that it only affects females. Men can suffer from both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, which affect energy, weight, and even muscle strength. A simple TSH blood test is all it takes to find out, so go for it.

Please get a proper thyroid panel blood test done for safety if you are experiencing sudden weight changes or chronic fatigue. Thyroid issues in men are real and can sometimes lead to heart or cholesterol complications if neglected. Consult an endocrinologist to get the right medical guidance.
