Can gum cause cavities?

I chew a lot of sugar-free gum throughout the day, mainly for fresh breath. My dentist told me to cut down because it might cause cavities. Can even sugar-free gum be bad for my teeth in the long run?

If you are chewing regular gum with sugar, then yes, it can definitely cause cavities. The sugar stays on your teeth for a long time which makes it easy for bacteria to grow. Try switching to sugar-free gums with xylitol instead, as they are actually much safer for your teeth.

I actually didn't know gum could harm teeth, I thought it actually cleans them after meals. Does even sugar-free chewing gum cause some damage if we chew it for hours? Pls let me know if anyone has asked their dentist about this.

At my age, half my teeth are already complaining, so chewing sugary gum is like inviting the dentist to take my whole salary. If you want to keep your natural teeth, stay far away from those sweet bubblegums. Sugar-free ones are okay, but don't chew them until your jaw starts paining!

Honestly, I survive on coffee and chewing gum just to stay awake at my desk during night shifts. I probably chew way too much of it without thinking. Reading this makes me realize I should probably check if my brand is full of sugar before my teeth rot away.

I used to chew sweet mint gums all day in college and ended up with two nasty cavities. My dentist literally scolded me and told me to stick to sugar-free versions only. Now I am super careful and always check the packet before buying.
