Can gout cause kidney failure?

Gout has been with me for many years, and lately, I'm getting worried about its long-term effects. My friend, whose father has kidney issues, asked me if gout can cause kidney failure in the long run.

I recently read that high uric acid from gout can damage the kidneys over time, and now I am extremely worried. My father has gout and I keep stressing about his kidney health. Has anyone else gone through this anxiety, and how do you monitor their kidney function?

Preventing kidney issues from gout is much cheaper than treating them later. You can get a combined Uric Acid and Kidney Function Test (KFT) package from local labs for around 500 to 800 rupees. Doing this once or twice a year is a highly practical way to keep track of your health.

Yes, chronic high uric acid can lead to kidney stones and eventually affect kidney function if left untreated. A simple and practical step is to get regular kidney function tests (KFT) along with uric acid tests, and ensure he drinks at least 3 liters of water daily.

Actually, untreated gout means there is a constant high level of uric acid in the blood, which can form crystals in the kidneys and cause damage over time. It is very important to manage gout with proper long-term medication prescribed by a doctor, rather than just taking painkillers during a flare-up.

I had a scare with my kidney function markers last year due to long-term untreated gout. Fortunately, after my doctor put me on proper uric acid-lowering medication and I improved my diet, my kidney levels returned to normal. Please get it treated early to avoid complications.

It sounds very scary, but please try not to panic. With regular medical checkups and proper treatment, the risk to the kidneys can be managed very well. Just make sure to consult your family doctor for peace of mind.

When my grandfather's uric acid levels remained high, we took him to Apollo Hospital to consult a nephrologist. They explained how gout can affect kidney health and started him on preventive care. I highly recommend asking your doctor clearly about kidney safety during your next visit.
