Can fluoride reverse cavities?

My dentist pointed out a very small cavity forming on one of my molars. She suggested a fluoride application. Can fluoride actually help in reversing these early stage cavities, or is it mainly for preventing new ones?

Fluoride can actually help reverse very early-stage cavities, like those tiny white spots before a proper hole forms. I had a small soft spot on my tooth last year and my dentist put a fluoride varnish on it, which really helped rebuild the enamel. But if there is already a deep cavity or pain, you will definitely need a proper filling.

Please don't delay going to the dentist thinking fluoride alone will fix a cavity. I tried using special toothpastes for months to heal my toothache, only to end up needing an expensive root canal because the decay had spread deep. Get a professional checkup done before the damage becomes severe.

I am so terrified of dental drills, so I kept hoping fluoride could magically fix my cavity without a dentist. Has anyone actually managed to heal a small cavity just by brushing with fluoride toothpaste? I really want to avoid getting a filling if there is any other way.

I read so many research papers on enamel remineralization because I was paranoid about getting cavities. Yes, fluoride can strengthen weakened enamel and stop decay in its absolute initial stages, which is reassuring! But if the enamel is physically broken, it cannot grow back, so please see a dentist to get a clear answer.

Let's be practical: fluoride only works on microscopic, early decay by strengthening the enamel. Once a physical cavity or hole is formed, no amount of brushing will reverse it. Save your time and just book a quick 15-minute dental appointment to get a professional filling done.
