Can fatty liver cause positive ama?

My recent blood test results showed a positive AMA (Antimitochondrial Antibody), along with my existing fatty liver diagnosis. I am a bit confused if these two are related. Can fatty liver cause a positive AMA result?

I am not very sure about this, but is AMA test different from normal liver function tests? My doctor only ordered an ultrasound for my fatty liver. Should I also ask them about this AMA test?

A positive AMA (antimitochondrial antibody) usually points toward an autoimmune liver condition like PBC, rather than just simple fatty liver. My daughter had some liver issues and we had to run these tests. Please consult a specialist to understand the difference clearly.

Don't search this on the internet, it will only show scary autoimmune diseases. AMA is a very specific antibody test, and simple fatty liver doesn't usually cause it to be positive. Go verify this with a proper gastroenterologist.

I totally get it, seeing terms like positive AMA on your report can be very confusing and scary. Please don't assume the worst. Sometimes different liver conditions can overlap, so it is best to let a doctor interpret the results.

I was researching this because a friend got her tests done. From what I read, a positive AMA is linked to primary biliary cholangitis, which is different from fatty liver. Definitely consult a specialist to get a correct diagnosis.
