Can exercise raise liver enzymes?

I had a recent health check-up, and my liver enzymes were higher than normal. The doctor asked if I had done any strenuous activity recently. Can exercise actually cause liver enzymes to temporarily rise, and should I be concerned?

I read that very heavy, unaccustomed weightlifting can cause muscle damage that temporarily shows up as high liver enzymes in blood tests. If you are diabetic, always check with your doctor before starting extreme workouts.

Yes, intense workouts or starting a heavy gym routine suddenly can temporarily inflate AST and ALT levels due to muscle soreness. Take a week of light activity and get re-tested to see the real picture.

Excessive or violent physical strain can stress the body's systems temporary. Shifting to gentle yoga and moderate walking keeps the body balanced without causing such sudden spikes in your blood reports.

This exact thing happened to me after I did a heavy leg day before my blood test. My doctor told me to rest for 4 to 5 days and avoid all heavy lifting, and my liver enzymes came back completely normal.

It can happen temporarily if you do a very intense workout. Try to rest well and talk to your doctor to see if you should repeat the test after a few days.

Don't panic if your reports showed a slight rise right after a hard workout session. It is very common for muscles to release these enzymes when healing, but just get it verified by your family doctor to be safe.
