Can emotional trauma cause thyroid problems?

I went through a very difficult emotional trauma a few years ago, and recently I was diagnosed with a thyroid disorder. My doctor said it's common, but I'm curious about the link. Is it possible for significant emotional trauma to actually trigger or cause thyroid problems?

My daughter developed thyroid issues right after we went through a very difficult family loss. The emotional toll was just too much for her young body. Please take care of your emotional wellbeing, and do get a simple T3, T4, TSH blood test done to be sure.

Yes, intense emotional trauma can severely impact the endocrine system. The high level of stress hormones like cortisol can disrupt your thyroid function. In my years in this group, I have seen many people develop thyroid issues after a major life shock.

Dealing with PCOS has taught me how fragile our hormonal balance is, and emotional trauma can definitely throw it off. While I can't say it is the only cause, it is certainly a major trigger. Please seek support for both your mind and body.

I struggled with severe anxiety and trauma after a bad breakup, and shortly after, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. It was so hard to accept that my emotional pain had turned into a permanent physical issue. It's a very real connection, and your feelings are totally valid.

I was actually reading an article on this recently! It turns out that severe trauma can trigger autoimmune responses in the body, which might lead to conditions like Hashimoto's. It's really wild how deeply our mind and body are connected.

Chronic stress and trauma cause a massive spike in cortisol, which directly interferes with thyroid hormone production. I track my sleep and stress levels on my wearable, and the physiological impact of mental stress is very real. Definitely consult an endocrinologist.

I totally get it, going through trauma makes your whole system feel like it is shutting down. It is completely possible for that extreme emotional weight to manifest physically as a thyroid imbalance. Please be very gentle with yourself right now.

I have been feeling so exhausted and gaining weight ever since a major personal crisis last year, and my doctor just suggested a thyroid test. Did anyone else develop thyroid issues right after a very stressful life event? I am feeling quite scared.
