Can electrolytes cause kidney stones?

I sometimes take electrolyte drinks after a heavy workout, especially in this heat. My cousin has had kidney stones twice, and I'm worried about anything that might contribute. Can taking electrolyte supplements or having an imbalance of electrolytes lead to the formation of kidney stones?

At this age, even drinking water sometimes feels like a risk, haha! But seriously, if you are guzzling down those fancy electrolyte drinks with too much calcium or sodium without needing them, it can burden your kidneys. Stick to plain water unless you are running a marathon in this heat.

When I was diagnosed with kidney stones, I was so scared and kept blaming everything I ate or drank. It is really stressful trying to figure out what went wrong. Electrolytes themselves aren't bad, but taking heavy supplements without a doctor's advice can definitely cause issues.

It mostly depends on the type of electrolytes and your daily intake. High amounts of calcium and sodium in some sports supplements can increase stone risk if your water intake is low. I track my macro and micro-nutrients on an app, and balance is key!

In my seventy years, I have seen that excess of anything is bad for the body. Natural electrolytes from coconut water or a simple home lemonade are perfectly fine. Just don't overdo the store-bought powders and keep yourself well hydrated with normal water.

Bro, if you are just sitting in an AC room and drinking ORS or sports drinks daily, it is bad. My gym buddy ended up with a stone because he was abusing calcium and electrolyte pills. Just drink regular water, your body doesn't need extra salts unless you are sweating heavily.

I just got cleared of a painful kidney stone last month, and my urologist specifically told me to cut down on artificial electrolyte packets. They had high sodium which can trigger stone formation. Switched back to normal water and fresh lime juice now.
