Can eating spinach cause kidney stones?

My mother has a history of kidney stones, and I've heard that foods high in oxalates can be a risk factor. I really enjoy eating spinach (palak) in curries and dals. Should I be concerned that eating spinach might cause kidney stones for me?

Palak toh bohot acchi cheez hai, par har cheez hadd se zyada nuksan karti hai. Humare yahan toh log dahi aur palak thoda sambhal ke khate hain. Agar pehle se koi takleef hai toh dactar sahab se pooch kar hi khayein.

Please be very careful with this. My husband had severe pain last year and it turned out to be oxalate stones because we were drinking raw spinach juice daily thinking it is healthy. The doctor strictly told us to stop self-medicating and get a proper scan done first.

Oh god, please don't say I have to give up Palak Paneer! I eat it almost every week. I guess everything is fine as long as we don't eat kg of spinach daily, right? Balance is key!

I was actually reading about this yesterday on some medical blogs. Apparently, spinach has high oxalates which can bind with calcium. I am trying to figure out if cooking it properly reduces the risk or if we should avoid it entirely.

Eating spinach in normal home-cooked amounts with some lemon juice is usually fine because vitamin C and water help. But if you have sharp side pain or blood in urine, don't try any home remedies. Go straight to a hospital.

This thought literally keeps me up at night because I eat green salads daily. I am always worried that a silent stone is growing inside me. If you feel any mild lower back pain or burning sensation while peeing, please go get an ultrasound done immediately.

Honestly, I am too tired to even cook spinach, let alone worry about kidney stones from it. But my mom always says drink tons of water if you eat palak. I guess staying hydrated is the easiest way to not end up in the ER.

Yes, spinach is rich in calcium oxalate, which is the main component of most kidney stones. If you have a family history or have had stones before, it is best to limit your intake and drink lots of water. Definitely talk to an urologist to understand your specific body chemistry.

I didn't know spinach could be bad for health, I always thought green leafy veggies are the safest. Does boiling the spinach help in removing these oxalates, or should we avoid eating it with paneer and dahi?

I felt some dull ache in my left lower back after eating spinach soup last week and got so scared. Has anyone else experienced pain immediately after eating it, or is it just my anxiety playing tricks on me?

I can only share what happened to me. My doctor told me to reduce spinach, tomatoes, and tea after my kidney stone treatment. Ever since I cut down on these, I haven't had any recurring issues, but everyone's body is different.

If you are worried, better to get a basic urine routine test and a kidney function test done. They cost around 500-800 rupees in local labs and will save you from expensive emergency hospitalizations later. Better to be safe.
