Can dvts cause stroke?

My doctor told me I'm at risk for DVT because of my lifestyle. I'm trying to understand all the complications. Can blood clots from DVT travel and cause a stroke?

I actually just got treated for DVT in my left leg last month. My doc explained that usually DVT clots go to the lungs, which is super dangerous too, but in rare cases if there's a tiny hole in the heart it can reach the brain and cause a stroke. Please don't ignore any leg swelling or pain, get it checked immediately.

My teenager had to go through a deep clot issue last year and we were terrified about this. The doctors reassured us that with the right blood thinners, the risk is managed very well. Just make sure they don't skip their medicines and go for regular checkups.

According to the vascular specialist I consult, DVT typically leads to a pulmonary embolism in the lungs. However, if a person has a patent foramen ovale, which is a common heart passage, the clot can slip into the arterial system and cause a stroke. They usually run an echo scan to rule this out.

Technically a DVT clot can cause something called a paradoxical stroke if it travels through a heart defect. I keep track of my activity levels on my smartwatch to avoid sitting too long on flights. Definitely get a professional medical opinion on this instead of relying on online searches.

Please do not wait around like I did when my leg started swelling up years ago. I thought it was just a muscle pull and ended up in the ICU with severe complications. If there's even a small doubt of DVT, go to a doctor today.

Yes, it is possible though rare, so please don't take it lightly. Get an appointment with a cardiologist or vascular specialist as soon as you can.

This sounds really scary to even think about, honestly. If you or someone you know has DVT and is feeling any sudden numbness, trouble speaking, or confusion, please rush to the hospital immediately. It's always better to be safe and get a doctor's help right away.

I have thyroid issues so I'm always paranoid about circulation and clot risks. My doctor always says that regular blood tests and keeping an eye on your coagulation profile is key if you have risk factors. Please don't self-diagnose and visit a proper doctor for this.
