Can drinking too much tea cause kidney stones?

I've been drinking chai several times a day for decades, it's a habit for me. My son recently read somewhere that drinking too much tea, especially black tea, can contribute to kidney stones. Is this something I should be concerned about at my age?

I used to drink around 6 cups of chai daily and suffered from kidney stones twice. I tried so many home remedies like drinking corn silk tea and lots of lemon juice, which did help a bit, but the most practical solution was simply cutting my daily chai intake to just two cups and drinking plenty of plain water instead.

My doctor actually explained that black tea is very rich in oxalates, which can combine with calcium in your urine to form calcium oxalate stones. He told me that drinking more than 3-4 cups of strong tea a day, especially without milk, can significantly increase the risk if you are prone to stones. He advised me to limit my tea and always drink extra water.

Humare yahan toh log din bhar chai peete rehte hain, par zyada chai peene se pet mein jalan aur pathri ki shikayat ho sakti hai. Doctor sahib ne bataya tha ki chai mein kuch aise tatva hote hain jo pathri banate hain. Isliye chai thoda kam pijiye aur uski jagah saadha paani zyada pijiye.

Since I manage my diabetes carefully, I have to be extremely mindful of my diet and fluid intake. High consumption of sweet tea not only spikes blood sugar but the oxalates in tea can also put extra load on the kidneys, leading to stones. It is always wise to keep your tea moderate and focus on keeping your blood sugar and hydration in check.

I can totally relate because I am a huge chai lover too, and I was shocked to learn that black tea is high in oxalates which can cause stones. Now, I try to dilute my tea with a good amount of milk or switch to herbal infusions sometimes. It's a small change but definitely feels much safer for the body.
