Can diabetics use melatonin?

I've been struggling with insomnia since my diabetes diagnosis, and a friend suggested trying melatonin. I'm worried it might affect my blood sugar or interact with my diabetes medication. Can diabetics safely use melatonin for sleep?

While melatonin is widely used for sleep issues, it can sometimes affect insulin secretion and glucose metabolism. It is highly advisable to consult your endocrinologist before starting any hormonal supplement like melatonin, especially if you are on diabetic medications.

Before starting melatonin, try adjusting your pre-bed habits. Cutting down screen time an hour before sleeping, avoiding heavy dinners, and doing a light evening walk can naturally boost your sleep quality and help manage your blood sugar levels better.

I always prefer a cup of warm chamomile tea or a small cup of warm turmeric milk before bed to help with sleep naturally. However, if your insomnia is severe and affecting your daily life, please don't self-medicate with melatonin; it is safer to ask your doctor for advice.

I used melatonin for jet lag, but being diabetic, I noticed it slightly altered my morning fasting sugar levels. It's not a magic pill and can mess with your insulin sensitivity, so do not start taking it daily without keeping your doctor informed.

I totally get it, sleepless nights are so frustrating and they make managing diabetes even harder the next day. But please be careful with melatonin as it can sometimes interact with your blood sugar. Talk to your doctor, they will find a safe way to help you sleep.

Yes, but melatonin can impact insulin sensitivity in some people. It is best to check with your doctor before starting it.

In our days, we practiced deep breathing and slept early. If you are struggling with sleep, try massaging your feet with a little warm oil before bed. These new chemical tablets like melatonin might react with your daily diabetes medicines, so please consult your doctor first.
